No Fuel Shortage in Bhubaneswar, Dealers Association Appeals Against Panic Buying

The Utkal Petroleum Dealers Association has assured residents of Bhubaneswar that there is no shortage of petrol or diesel in the city, urging people not to panic amid a sudden rise in fuel purchases over the past few days.
Long queues were seen outside several petrol pumps across the Odisha capital on Thursday after rumours circulated about a possible fuel crisis linked to tensions in West Asia and concerns surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil shipping route.
However, fuel dealers said the situation remains under control and that sufficient fuel stocks are available across most outlets in the city.
Dealers Dismiss Fuel Crisis Rumours
Speaking to reporters, Association General Secretary Sanjay Lath said all major fuel stations in Bhubaneswar currently have adequate supplies of petrol and diesel.
He clarified that only a few smaller outlets temporarily ran low on stock because of an unexpected surge in demand triggered by panic buying.
According to Lath, consumers rushed to fuel stations after rumours spread regarding a possible disruption in fuel supply due to the ongoing US-Iran conflict and concerns over global oil transportation routes.
He said the sharp increase in fuel purchases caused rapid depletion at a handful of pumps with limited storage capacity.
Fuel Sales Rise Nearly 50 Percent
The association stated that fuel sales in Bhubaneswar have increased significantly over the past three days.
Lath said some people allegedly misinterpreted Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent appeal for fuel conservation and economic restraint as an indication of an impending shortage, leading to panic buying.
As a result, petrol sales in the city reportedly rose by nearly 50 percent compared to normal levels.
Out of the 41 petrol pumps operating in Bhubaneswar, only three to four outlets were temporarily affected due to high demand and smaller storage infrastructure, he added.
Fresh Fuel Supplies Expected Overnight
The association said fresh fuel stocks are expected to reach affected outlets overnight, which should normalise supply conditions completely by Friday.
Lath also noted that unusually high demand had slowed transportation and replenishment schedules for some stations.
He assured consumers that there is currently no restriction on fuel purchases and that people can refill their vehicle tanks normally without any rationing.
“The situation is completely normal now. Petrol and diesel are available at all pumps,” he said while appealing to the public not to believe unverified rumours.
Why the Situation Triggered Concern
Global oil markets often react sharply to geopolitical tensions in West Asia because the region plays a major role in international crude oil supply.
The Strait of Hormuz, located between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman, is one of the world’s most important oil transit routes. Any concern about disruptions in the area can create anxiety over global fuel prices and supply chains.
However, fuel dealers in Bhubaneswar stressed that there has been no official announcement regarding any disruption in domestic fuel availability.
Public Urged to Avoid Panic Buying
Industry representatives warned that panic buying itself can temporarily disrupt local supply chains by causing sudden spikes in demand.
They urged residents to avoid crowding petrol stations unnecessarily and rely only on official information from fuel companies and government agencies.
Officials said regular fuel replenishment operations are continuing and normal supply conditions are expected across all petrol pumps in the city over the coming days.
Key Insights
- The incident highlights how misinformation and unverified rumours can quickly disrupt local supply systems, even when there is no actual shortage of essential commodities such as fuel.
- Concerns linked to the Strait of Hormuz underline India’s continued dependence on global crude oil supply routes, particularly from West Asia, making international geopolitical tensions closely watched by domestic energy markets.
- Industry experts have repeatedly noted that panic buying itself can create temporary logistical stress on supply chains by accelerating demand beyond normal replenishment cycles, especially at smaller retail outlets.
- The sharp rise in fuel purchases also reflects the sensitivity of consumers to global economic and geopolitical developments, particularly amid ongoing uncertainty in international energy markets.
- The response from fuel dealers and local supply operators demonstrates the importance of timely public communication in preventing unnecessary disruption and maintaining consumer confidence during periods of uncertainty.
- The situation may prompt authorities and fuel distributors to strengthen public awareness efforts around fuel supply management and encourage reliance on verified government and industry updates rather than social media speculation.
